The American Legion is the largest U.S. Veterans Organization in the world. It is a place where veterans and their families come together for camaraderie and the continuation of service.  American Legion Post 1 is the First and oldest post in Louisiana, chartered in 1920.  Our home at 1530 9Th Street was built in 1947 on land donated by Matilda Gray, and has remained active as the focal point of many veterans and civic activities through the years.

We are an organization of Veterans Strengthening America, and our mission is to enhance the well-being of America's veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness. The American Legion's vision statement is, "The American Legion: Veterans Strengthening America.

Selfless Service

The American Legion celebrates all who contribute to something larger than themselves and inspires others to serve and strengthen America.

  • Supporting Local Initiatives to end Veteran Homelessness
  • Supporting Local Initiatives to end Hunger and Food Insecurities
  • Raising money for VA hospitals, women and children centers, children and youth centers, schools and other facilities.
  • Sponsoring and Participating in Local Non-Profit Missions and Fundraisers.
  • Local Memorial Ceremonies and Community Parades.
  • Promoting Veteran Owned Small Business
  • Providing Education Tools, Resources, Grants, and Mentors for Veteran Owned Businesses
  • Educating Veterans on their earned Benefits
  • Assisting Veterans with Veterans Administration Claims paperwork

How To Get Started

Become a Post 1 Corporate Sponsor

With your annual donation of $10,000 or more where Post 1 goes, you go! This is the perfect option for a company or organization that wants to be a part of everything we do in the community. Be a part of all Post Events, Marketing, Outreach, and Programs.  We will have only one Corporate Sponsor from each functional area, such as an Auto Dealership, Financial Organization, Industry, etc. 

Become an Individual Post 1 Sponsor

Your donation of $500 or more per year helps to support American Legion Post 1 Programs and Initiatives throughout the year. Your generous donation will support, Boy Scout Troop 5, Cub Scout Pack 5, Sea Cadets Chennault Battalion,  and Post 1 Community Projects.

Friends of the Legion

Being a Friend of the Legion is easy. This enables individuals or groups to make donations in any amount while not committing to a formal sponsorship.  These donations are also deductible.  Funds from Friends of the Legion are earmarked for use as explained above, and are greatly appreciated.
